Week 14 the Motion Comics and Webcomics (5 points)

This week we had the chance to explore the world of motion comics and webcomics.  this is a subject that has become more and more popular recently and has grown immensely in the past couple of years. there is definitely a necessity for finding new and exciting stories coming from different sources than the mainstream media. mostly because those places have been already heavily influenced by the social justice warriors or the family-friendly mafia. when big companies like Disney or DreamWorks etc get involved is very difficult to have creative freedom and these spaces online are definitely ways that we can embrace that type of freedom to create interesting and meaningful stories. this week I had the chance to read the octopus pie collection. it was a very interesting experience. the drawing style is very much a hybrid that reminds me of the art of Bryan lee O'Malley in the Scott pilgrim comics with the Simpsons style of expressions and forms. there are many interesting aspects of h

Week twelve women making comics (7 points)( 1-7 issues)

In this week's assignment, we visited the topic of women making comics. as many traits created by humans before being a comic artist wasn't something that was easy for women. it was a world ruled mostly by men who were very close minded even jealous at some point to let women participate in art. this week I chose to read the 7 issues of the lumberjanes, it is interesting to know I bought one of these comic books in one of my visits to Barnes and Noble because I felt attracted to the comic cover. I never really finished because I stopped at probably the 4 pages finding the dialogues very annoying and difficult to get interested in. it wasn't before this class that I actually committed to read all of them and develop an honest opinion about this type of representation of woman in comics. I have to say that my opinion about this specific comic is that I completely and utterly hate it. is one of the worst representations I ever seen of how to develop characters and deliver a g

Week Eleven Graphic literature (9 points)

This week's assignment was to visit the graphic literature. this subject for me was confusing at a first point because I was associating the term with graphic novels. but during the reading, I encountered that these two things are very similar and very different in matters of depth. graphic literature is when the graphic novel became an icon of the literature and carry way more relevance to the genre than just being part of an independent graphic novel. it can be said that the titles we read this week were almost a must for anyone who likes literature for anyone who likes comics. I choose to read the sandman by Neil Gaiman. this piece of literature was a very interesting one to me, it treats one of my favorite subjects of the human mind and gives us a very interesting introspective view of the dreamworld and the entities that ruled this fantastic world. I dead two volumes of this series, volume number one preludes and nocturnes and volume 2 the doll's house. in one we have the

Week ten MANGA (9 points)

This is another subject that I love and played a big part in my artistic influence. Manga played a huge role in what inspired me to start my drawings at an early age. this was because of the limitation we have in maters of tv show back in my country. the most viewed and transmitted shows for kids were somehow the ones replayed in japan like Saint Seiya, captain Tsubasa, pokemon, Digimon, dragon ball z, and many others. this week we had the chance to read the world-famous Osamu Tezuka, a person who not only changed the comic books (manga) in japan forever but also it was the person who began with one of his most famous stories (Astroboy) the world of animation. the work I choose to read was Phoenix volume one and volume 2. in this comic we were able to see the classic Osamu Tezuka style of drawing and storytelling, but at the same time, we were able to see his early beginnings. phoenix is a very strange story but also it contains all the strong elements you can expect from the manga. f

Week nine Euro comics ( 6 points)

this week we had the amazing chance to visit the euro comics and analyze the work of one of my favorite artist of all time, Moebius was the artist the implemented in my opinion in the best way possible at the time a unique style of fantasy and futuristic atmosphere never seen before. when I was growing up I took many of his artwork as inspiration to go beyond the normal standards in my artistic career. Moebius open a door I never seen opened by anyone before. his work transports us to surreal realms where the unexpected is always the main focal point. the quality of the art is just splendid and the sense of atmosphere is let the viewer immerse themself in his stories in a very majestic way. this week I took time to read more than one of his pieces. of them being the goodness and the garden of aedena , one giving us a feeling that reminds me of the album cover of dragon force (an epic metal band) fused with Arabic tones and majestic figures from different planets. and the other one giv

Week Eight Non-fiction comics (6 points)

In this week's assignment, we visited the Non-fiction comics. this is genera of comics that came to tell a different side of the story. this type of comics is taking advantage of the visual possibilities of comics to tell a story in a way more appealing way. mostly this type of comics come as historical events that were written down first and then they were transformed in a more visual way making use of the panels that comics provide. also, they can be used as biographical forms of storytelling. one example of this is this week's main story "KING" we will be visiting the life of Martin Luther King jr and the many points that built him as a very influential figure that changed the story. my experience reading king was a little bit different from what I expected. I think one of the main appealings of the comics is the right usage of the graphics to tell a story, and in this case, I felt the comic came out short in visuals or skill of the artist to make it interesting e

Week seven Maus and the legitimation of comics (6 points)

During this week's assignment, I will be discussing my experience of reading one of the most legendary and relevant comics ever created (MAUSS). this comic doesn't come just with the reading by itself but by the meaning behind it and by the context of the era. the main achievement that Mauss did was the legitimation of the comic books. it was one of the first comics that got popular to treat highly political concepts like the holocaust. at this time comics were mostly viewed from two perspectives, distractions mostly created to entertain the mind and the eyes of the kids or just irreverent jokes created for adults that discussed themes with no real impact in the society. with Mauss, all these points of views started to change and the world started to put their eyes into the possible art behind the storytelling on comics. my experience reading Mauss was a mixture of two perspectives, the one who read barely the comic before and had an idea of what it was about and the one I dev

Week six Underground comics (5 points)

This week we had the opportunity to read the underground comics. this by the hand of Patrick Rosenkrantz in his book Rebelvisions. this book was like reading one of the strangest I saw. this because we are not used to challenging our morals and self-restriction. this kind of subject is very interesting in the way that opens the human mind in a very touching way. even if some of the subjects are completely inappropriate to be applied in the real-life the way are delivered by the medium of the comics opens a door to self-acceptance and to have reflexibility. I think censorship more than being something to protect humans from deforming our sense of etic and morals is restricting the capacity to give value to those same aspects. the censorship creates an almost unbreakable truth and that type of dogma is actually creating a lie. we get used to getting told what to do or what to believe and it becomes easy to deny our own humanity. there are many subjects I never expected to find in a comi

Week Five: The Graphic Novel (6 points)

This week's Reading is was about the graphic novel. it was very interesting to know more about this subject. graphic novels are way deeper than comics in many matters and the subjects treated are better developed. one of the main reasons for this is that graphic novel is created as one rounded and complete story with a proposal. On the other hand, comics had constant pressure on how they need to perform based on monthly or weekly issues. comics have the necessity to be popular and markable to be relevant. they need to follow a specific type of publication and a timeline, these aspects didn't give the authors enough freedom at the time of molding the story.  graphic novels capture my attention right away more than the classic comics. one example of these blankets. blankest is a fantastic novel created with a very graphic and unique style. the type of topically treated in this piece is very deep. related to family, abuse, love, friendship, and the deep transformation of the char

Week 4 The comic book (3 points)

During this week lecture we approached the basic idea and form of the comic book example. now understanding what makes a comic what it is and how many different genres can be implemented in this format. we have a opportunity to see a new strong movement on the comic history and it is the appearing of the underground comics culture. this new boom gave us the opportunity to apply all these exploration done in past times and to start understanding the market in a way better way.  the most interesting reading I found this week as to be able to see the fantastic four storyboards. one of my favorite subjects is the pipeline of how comic books are done from the creation of the idea to the inking and coloring. I did a comic myself base mostly in the manga style. I learned about formatting and specific thing related to human psychology that involves how we process information and how we read. having the chance to see these storyboards and try to look for the original comics was an amazing expe

WEEK 3 the comic strip (4 points)

This week We read the Smithsonian collection of comics. These comics were very different to what I was used to read. there was many different subjects that were exposed and represented in a very unique way. these comics help me understand a wider representation of the society at that time. the vision in matters of roles and races where really different to what we have in the modern society. is difficult to be specific about this week reading because the comics were very short and also threading many different subjects at the same time. it was sincerely interesting and very eyes opening on the how much potential comics have to tell a story of deal with a specific subject, and how influential can be to our society. there was definitely an era of experimentation where the limits of the comics stand. this time was very important to explore what was going to be the reaction of society with comics and how intense was going to be their influence on people of all ages and ethnicities. from th

WEEK TWO : Understanding of Comics (7 points)

Week Two: Understanding comics One of the most interesting aspects that the video pointed out was the fact that comics created a very interesting line in how the abstraction. the meaning and the stylization played a huge role in the way we perceive a message. comics explore the senses using a strong form of visual stimulation, it pushes the boundaries of what is possible to be readable and to be comprehended by the viewer. comics are art of communication that fuses reality with art to create a unique way to deliver a message. comics have a structure and that structure is a reflection of how the human mind works. there is a reason for that specific organization that gives us an interesting view of how we process information and how the brain can transform visual stimulation into other senses. one example of this is the sound and the hearing sense. the way the words can trigger a specific sound in our brand making us believe or feel we actually hear that sound coming from a visual stimul

WEEK ONE: Wordless Comics (3 points)

WEEK ONE: Worldless Comics this week ill be analyzing my reaction to  The Comic Book History of the Comics my reaction to the book was something I didn't expect. I didn't know at all that there was material like that available for people who wanted to know more about comics and graphic novels. when I started my reading I realized that the format was very peculiar and I have to admit that I didn't like it at all. I felt there was a weird way to demonstrate the value of art using really bad art. I had many problems in the war the book was the layout and structure. also, the way the events were described was really unsatisfying and sometimes confusing. I have to admit that even though there is a lot of problems from my perspective with this material I did learn a lot. it was a very creative way to inform the reader about the history of comics and probably one of the best ways to do it. I don't think there is a better material to learn from and get involved. this is not bec
